Why do so many people from Taiwan dislike being called Chinese?

I'm aware it's because of them not wanting to be mistaken with "mainlanders" but still they are. Shouldn't they instead step forward and say, yes I'm Chinese, but not the type you think of? I mean, they are kind of denying their own ancestry, aren't they?
